CHAPTER SIX

THE sitting room was in total darkness when Natasha crept back to it and opened the door. ‘Hugh?’ she whispered tensely.

‘Here.’

The voice came from very close beside her, and she stepped back quickly, drawing in a ragged breath. ‘Right, I…we’d better get out of here. I’ll show you the way, and lock the door behind you.’

‘OK.’

She couldn’t see him, but she was very aware of him—she could hear him breathing, could detect the evocatively male, musky scent of his skin. He was close behind her as she moved cautiously along the short passage, her hand brushing against the wall as a guide until she found the front door and opened it, relieved to escape from the suddenly claustrophobic darkness of the apartment. ‘This way,’ she whispered, able now to see at least outlines in the glimmer of light seeping up from the far end of the downstairs corridor.

He was behind her on those silent feet as she hurried back down the stairs and through the deserted kitchen. They reached the back door without any alarms, but there she had to pause, fumbling in her pocket for the key. At last she found the lock, pushing open the door and drawing in a deep gulp of the cool, fresh night air.

‘So…’ She turned to him, her manner formal and businesslike. ‘What happens now?’

‘I really don’t know.’ He shrugged those wide shoulders, a wry smile quirking that intriguing mouth. ‘I suppose it was pretty much a long shot that I would be able to find out anything that might incriminate Lester. There doesn’t seem to be much else I can do.’

Which meant that he would be leaving.

Of course, so far as she was concerned, the sooner the better. And, even more, it pleased her to know that he would have to accept that he had failed to get her into bed.

‘Well, then.’ She held out her hand, distantly polite. ‘I’d appreciate it, of course, if you would let me know if you do manage to turn up anything more.’

He glanced down at her hand, a glint of mocking amusement in his eyes, but he made no attempt to shake it. Instead she suddenly found herself trapped, with his two hands against the wall on each side of her shoulders, his face inches from her own. ‘Tell me,’ he murmured, his voice beguilingly husky, his breath warm against her cheek. ‘Why have you frozen up on me all of a sudden?’

It took a conscious effort to relax her jaw sufficiently to speak. ‘Frozen up?’

‘You know what I mean.’ One finger coiled idly into a loose strand of hair that had escaped from the band that held it in place. ‘Are you the same woman I danced with just a couple of hours ago? Or do you have a twin, a doppelgänger?’

Natasha felt a surge of anger. He really did believe that no woman could resist him! Struggling to ignore the sizzling charge of electricity that seemed to be arcing across the few centimetres that still lay between them, she forced herself to lift her eyes to meet his.
